(For Moms Struggling to Reclaim Health)
No matter what season of motherhood you're in, life has a way of pulling you in a hundred different directions. Whether you're a new mom recovering from childbirth, a mom of toddlers juggling their boundless energy, or deep in the trenches of balancing work and home life, prioritizing your health can feel impossible.
This is Part 3 of a four-part series where I’m sharing my personal experience of falling off the wagon and the lessons I’ve learned about getting back on track. If you missed Part 2, you can catch up on it. Just remember, mama—you’re not alone in this, and you have the power to shift your habits with patience and self-love.
As a postpartum mom juggling your health, your family, and everything in between, it’s easy to slip into unhealthy habits. Whether it's skipping your pelvic floor exercises, neglecting your nutrition, or feeling like you’ve lost the energy to do even the simplest things, we've all been there. So, what do you do when you find yourself in the middle of a “no-holds-barred” eating frenzy or overwhelmed with exhaustion and pain? Let's take a deep breath and make the choice to stop the cycle.
Make the Decision to Stop
When life gets overwhelming—whether it's the stress of raising toddlers, juggling work, or managing your postpartum recovery—you may find yourself feeling like you’re in “survival mode.” In these moments, it’s easy to ignore your own needs, whether it’s eating nutritious meals or taking the time for self-care. I’ve been there too. And here’s the thing: The first step is making a conscious decision to stop the madness.
For me, it was about recognizing the patterns of eating mindlessly in response to stress or exhaustion. As a busy mom, I often forgot to eat lunch, and by the time I remembered, I was ravenous and grabbing anything I could find. Those sugar cravings? Totally out of control. It’s the same for many of us—when we’re stressed, sleep-deprived, or emotionally drained, it’s easy to give in to poor food choices.
What Are Your Values?
The key is to reconnect with your values—what really matters to you right now as you navigate your postpartum journey. For example, as a mom who's experienced both physical and emotional changes post-birth, maintaining your pelvic health, staying strong for your kids, and nurturing your body are all important values.
I know it’s tempting to slip into unhealthy habits when you're overwhelmed, but this is your reminder to stop and make a shift. Just like I had to stop the cycle of mindless snacking, you too can shift your mindset and habits. Trust me, it's not always easy, but it starts with one decision to align your actions with what truly serves your well-being.
And if you’re someone who struggles with deeper emotional challenges related to food or body image, please know that you don’t have to navigate that alone. It’s okay to seek help from a counselor or therapist to work through those feelings and regain balance.
Make That Shift
For most of us, it’s simply a matter of noticing the patterns and making a choice to do things differently. The behaviors we fall into aren’t who we are—they're just reactions to stress, discomfort, and fatigue. But you have the power to make that change, one small step at a time.
So, what behaviors do you notice are sabotaging your progress? Are you neglecting your pelvic floor exercises or letting stress trigger unhealthy eating habits? It’s time to course-correct with kindness toward yourself.
Stay tuned next week for the final installment of this series, where I’ll share more insights on how to keep moving forward with love, patience, and dedication.
