Between work deadlines, school pickups, and never-ending to-do lists, taking care of yourself often gets pushed to the bottom of the list. Whether you’re a busy professional mom juggling meetings or a full-time caregiver running a household, you deserve moments of joy—including a little chocolate!
Let’s be real: some days feel overwhelming, and a small treat can bring a moment of comfort. But the good news is, you don’t have to choose between indulging and staying on track with your health. Instead of guilt, let’s talk about a strategy that allows you to enjoy treats in a mindful, balanced way.
As a mom, whether you're navigating the postpartum phase or enjoying life with older kids, I know how easy it is to feel overwhelmed by the balancing act of taking care of yourself while managing everything else. You may be juggling leaky bladders, persistent pain, or rebuilding core strength—let’s be real, it’s a lot! And sometimes, in the midst of it all, you just need that moment of indulgence, that little something sweet to bring some joy to your day. And guess what? That’s okay! You don’t have to give up enjoying your favorite treats to stay on track with your health and wellness goals. Let’s talk about how you can enjoy a little indulgence mindfully and guilt-free.
No Guilt, Just Grace and Mindful Enjoyment
I want to remind you that there’s no need for guilt when it comes to enjoying a treat. Whether it's a few M&Ms or a piece of your favorite chocolate, treating yourself can be part of a balanced, healthy lifestyle. In fact, allowing yourself small indulgences can actually support your long-term wellness by keeping you from feeling restricted or deprived. As moms, we often feel like we have to be perfect in our routines, but perfection isn’t the goal—balance is.
The Planned Indulgence Strategy: Simple, Kind, and Effective
What I’m about to share is a strategy that works because it’s grounded in self-compassion and mindfulness. I call it “Planned Indulgences.” This isn’t about restricting yourself or trying to be perfect—it’s about being kind to yourself and making intentional, mindful choices. It’s about finding that sweet spot where you nourish your body without feeling deprived and without falling into cycles of guilt.
Here’s how you can start:
-
Choose Your Treats Wisely
You deserve to enjoy your favorite foods, so why not plan for it? Maybe you decide on a small 100-calorie treat each day, like a handful of chocolate or a piece of your favorite snack. Or, if you feel comfortable, you can plan two treat meals during the week where you indulge in something you love—without overdoing it. Remember, it’s about quality, not quantity. A little goes a long way. -
Mindfulness is Key
When you treat yourself, savor every moment. Eating with mindfulness means enjoying the flavor, texture, and experience of the food rather than rushing through it. When we eat mindfully, we’re more likely to feel satisfied and less likely to crave more. This can also help you feel more connected to your body and your choices. -
Avoid Trigger Foods at First
If there are certain foods that tend to trigger a binge or a guilt spiral, it’s okay to hold off on them for now. Choose a treat that brings you joy but doesn’t send you into that cycle of “I-can’t-stop-eating-this.” Over time, as you practice mindfulness and balance, you can work toward including those foods in your planned indulgences—at your own pace, when you’re ready. -
Self-Compassion Over Perfection
As a mom, you’re doing so much already. I want you to embrace self-compassion. Rebuilding your core strength, managing pelvic health, and balancing life as a busy mom—whether your kids are newborns or 10 years old—is no small feat. Celebrate the small victories, and remember, healing is a journey. Enjoying your treats without guilt is part of honoring your body and your health as you continue to grow stronger.
Make Your Health Journey a Joyful One
It’s easy to get caught up in the pursuit of "perfection" when it comes to diet and exercise, but real health isn’t about restricting or depriving yourself. It’s about balance. You deserve to enjoy the foods you love, and you deserve to do it with kindness toward yourself. So, when that craving hits, go ahead—plan for it, enjoy it, and move forward with grace. Your health journey is yours to create, and there’s no “wrong” way to take steps toward wellness as long as you’re moving with love, care, and consistency.
You’re doing great, and I’m so proud of you for all the hard work you’re putting in. It’s not always easy, but every small step counts. Remember: you’re worthy of both health and happiness, and treating yourself with kindness is part of that journey.
What’s your go-to indulgence? How do you incorporate treats into your healthy lifestyle? I’d love to hear from you!
