Change Your Mind, Change Your Body: Empowering Moms

Change Your Mind, Change Your Body: Empowering Moms

Mama, you’ve been through so much—physically, mentally, and emotionally. The postpartum journey isn’t just about healing your body; it’s about rewiring your mindset so you can step into your strength again. If you’re dealing with leaky bladders, persistent pain, or weak core muscles, know this: your body is capable of healing, and the first step starts with shifting your perspective.

As moms, we know how easy it is to update the software on our phones without hesitation, but when it comes to our own mindset, how often do we think about giving ourselves a “software update”? Just like our phones, in order for us to thrive—especially as postpartum moms—we need to regularly update our mindset to support our health and wellness. Whether you're dealing with leaky bladders, persistent pain, weak core strength, or juggling the energy demands of a toddler and older kids, your mindset can make all the difference in your healing journey.

Step 1: Understand the Block

If you’re struggling with incontinence, back pain, or feeling weak in your core after childbirth, the physical symptoms are often linked to deeper mental blocks. Perhaps you’re not fully aware of what’s holding you back or don’t want to face it. But once you recognize these hidden barriers, you’ve already begun the process of healing.

Many moms believe that the physical symptoms are the issue—whether it's not feeling strong enough, the embarrassment of leaky bladders, or the frustration with not bouncing back. But it’s often the mindset behind those challenges that keeps you from finding relief.

Exercise: Take a moment to reflect on your goals for healing. Maybe you want to regain your strength and confidence or get back to a workout routine. Then, write down 5 negative things you associate with achieving that goal. For instance:

  • "I’m too tired to work on my core."

  • "If I get strong again, I’ll have to deal with people commenting on my body."

  • "I don’t have time to focus on myself with my kids needing me."

  • "I’m worried that exercising will make my bladder leaks worse."

Step 2: Hone In on the Biggies

Now that you have your list of drawbacks, circle the ones that really stand out. Perhaps you’ve been feeling guilty for wanting to take time for yourself or afraid that getting stronger might lead to discomfort or even worse symptoms. Recognizing these fears is key.

Sit with those feelings for a moment. Ask yourself, “Are these fears truly stopping me from moving forward? Would I rather stay stuck in this cycle of pain and discomfort, or am I ready to make a change?” Understanding your personal barriers will empower you to make different choices, even if those choices feel difficult at first.

Step 3: Understand that the Pain is Not the Problem

The persistent pain, weakness, or incontinence might feel like the problem, but they’re often just symptoms of something deeper. Maybe it’s emotional exhaustion from constant caregiving, guilt about not putting yourself first, or a lack of belief in your body’s ability to heal. When you understand that the symptoms are only one layer of the issue, you can address the root cause.

For example, if you're struggling with pelvic floor health and fear of leaks, maybe the true issue is fear of not being good enough or strong enough as a mom. Recognize that these feelings don’t define you, and they don’t have to control your healing journey.

Step 4: Shift Your Mindset and Take Action

Once you recognize the mental blocks holding you back, it’s time to shift your mindset. Acknowledge your worth and embrace the belief that you deserve to feel strong, vibrant, and healthy again.

Small changes, like committing to a few minutes of pelvic floor exercises each day or starting with gentle core work, can build momentum. Celebrate the small wins along the way. Every time you take a step toward healing, whether it’s showing up for yourself or just making time for a short stretch, you’re one step closer to reclaiming your body and your life.

Remember: Healing isn’t linear, and there’s no "perfect" way to get there. But with a mindset update—filled with self-love, compassion, and patience—you can break free from the physical and mental blocks that have been holding you back. Embrace the journey, celebrate the small victories, and know that every step is leading you closer to your best self.

You’ve got this, mama. Every small step forward is a win. 💪💖
